Florida cops appear to race cruisers down street in viral video, sparking probe

Three Florida police officers were caught seemingly racing each other down a near-empty Miami street, sparking an investigation into the alleged unprofessional behavior.

The viral footage kicks off with the three Miami-Dade Police cruisers lined up at a right light moments before they peeled off.

“They fixin’ to do a hit right here,” the man recording the video shared on the X account @ONLYinDADE explained. “We got the Charger versus the Ford versus the other Ford.”

The driver points out that it appeared the officer in the middle signaled to the other officers to get ready to take off.

As the light turned green, tires from at least one of the cop cars were heard screeching while all three sped down the public street with their engines reviving.

“See, the police doing a hit now,” the man says as he watches the cars speed forward side-by-side before the video ends.

While the road appeared empty in front of the cop cars, the Miami-Dade Police Department was not pleased with the officer’s actions after the video began circulating on social media.

Miami-Dade police officials confirmed that the cruiser belonged to their department and that they are working to identify those involved with the alleged street race, according to NBC6.

Officials told the outlet that the department planned to take the appropriate administrative action once they concluded their investigation.

The video, posted on X Monday and has been viewed over 70k times, also sparked some outrage from users — with some calling the officers for appearing to “disobey the very laws they enforce.”

“Miami cops love to disobey the very laws they enforce on the rest of us,” one X user commented.

“Taxpayers $$ at work. All 3 need to be charged with reckless driving and Drag racing…,” another commented.

“Great Example of why people drive crazy in @MiamiDadeCounty,” pointed out another.

Florida law enforcement officers issued more than 9,100 citations for street racing and stunt driving between 2018 and 2023, according to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

With a spike in street racing citations in 2022, the Florida legislature implemented new laws to help curb the dangerous activity.

On March 1, the Florida Senate passed legislation intensifying the penalties for drivers who participate in street or highway racing, according to The Miami Herald.

The change in legislation comes after lawmakers attempt to crack down on street takeovers, which are running in Florida and across a majority of states in the country.

Under the new bill, violators could be fined up to $2,000 and lose their license for a year for their first offense.

A second offense within a year would make the charge a felony, punishable by up to $4,000 in fines, a two-year license suspension, and up to five years in jail.

Anyone who commits three violations within five years faces up to 15 years in prison, $7,500 in fines, and a four-year license revocation.

The law can be enforced for any vehicle(s) suspected of racing that are caught screeching tires and reviving engines.

Violators could face fines of up to $7,500 and lose their license for at least a year, under the new proposal.
